Off the Record

Day 121 – May 1, 2018

Sleeve – DWP

As technology continues to develop, new smaller, faster, better means of delivering information, music, movies, books, and shows, expand. If you are like me then you probably are like, “where was all this when I was growing up.” Yet then, in the same breath, you are saying “these kids don’t know what they are missing.” Gone are those days of running with the walkman, having the machine eat your tape and then meticulously winding it back up with a pencil. And if you are like me then you miss the sound that can only be made with vinyl lp’s. Who doesn’t remember buying their first record and the name of that album. For me it was Meatloaf’s “Bat of Hell.” I distinctly remember taking the shrink wrap off, pulling out the sleeve and removing that shiny black circle, very carefully, and handle the record, using the edges, so as not to leave any fingerprints. And then, ever so gently, lining that small hole in the middle with the stem and sliding it down so it lay on the pad. And finally, turning the knob in order to bring the player to 33 1/2 rpm and with a steady hand placing the fine needle onto the edge of the record producing a sound that only phonograph can produce. It’s a sound that today’s youth will probably not appreciate, but really should if they love music. It is also nice to see that there are three record stores in my area. And to hear that vinyl being played again, brings music to my ears. Thanks for listening.

    • That’s just too weird. Combine that with reading your post yesterday, realizing the similarity in subject and then linking to it, that’s just too “small worldish” for me!
