Grapes of Wrath – DWP (Premonition)

Day 58 – February 27, 2018

This is going to be a stretch utilizing todays word prompt – premonition, so bear with me (I also wanted to showcase this photo that I took on my way home today.)  I have been making my way up and down this highway, pretty much daily, for the past 18 years.  You get pretty use to the landscape after and can know where you are based on what is off to your left and right.  Not much changes on this stretch of highway.  Yes, there is the occasional new house or farm, or altered landscape.  However, within the past 2 or 3 years a number of wineries have started sprouting up. And as it is with wineries, you got to have grapes.  I believe there are now 4 new wineries  along this stretch.  It must be easier to do than I thought.  Granted I have yet to visit any of them (added to my bucket list) nor have I tried their wines, but I am pretty sure that it won’t be terribly long that I do.

So how does premonition fit with this journal entry? The thought of being a wine drinker was pretty much inconceivable until about 5 years ago.  In the past I enjoyed the tastes of a good lager, ale, stout, you name it, I’d give it a shot.  Many a days perhaps too much.  But in 2009, while unwinding from a rough week, I had this very jarring feeling that something was about to happen that would cause me to stop enjoying a “cold one”.  I shook it off and continued.  In October of 2009, one month after that feeling, the cancer was found. I am not saying that the drink was the cause of the cancer, nor did it prevent me from continuing, but what ultimately caused the lost of enjoyment was the change in sense of taste that the chemo caused.  I simply could not stand the taste any longer.  And that was it.  And so for the next few years, I pretty much stayed dry.  That jarring feeling I had, happened.  Coincidental, maybe, but it is undeniable that it happened.  Flash forward 7 years, and a taste for wine was developed (in moderation, of course.)  Something I never thought of because I couldn’t even smell the stuff, unless it was the only thing left and all stores were closed. I did not have a premonition wine would become a beverage of choice, but I cannot help to think that there is an interesting connection. Made more interesting because that taste for wine happened at about the same time as these wineries started popping up.  I told you I would get to it! Thanks for indulging me.  (I’ve been a bit wordy the last couple of entries, my apologies.) Have a happy!
